Of the 30 or so active volunteer fire and rescue members of Stone Harbor, two hail from DL Miner Construction; Lieutenant Dave Bosacco and Fireman Dan Ball, of whom we are extremely proud. They epitomize the above and beyond commitment that we so admire. Both had family members who served, which encouraged them to do the same, and the unit is pretty much a family unto itself. A very tight team.
Of course, they respond to fires 24/7, but they’re also on the scene for gas leaks, EMS calls, water rescues, car accidents, storm incidents, power outages and pretty much anything else that can go wrong on this barrier island. Last year the company responded to 296 fire calls and 528 EMS calls. The volunteers go through extensive training at every level, and put in hours off the work clock. They are among the most fit members of the DL Miner staff, carrying 80lbs of gear on every call.
So when the SHFD is fundraising, please keep in mind that each volunteer’s gear alone costs about $6-7K, and give a little more generously. Because if you ever have to dial 911, these are the people you want to help you.
